Albuquerque, N.M. – Undergraduate assistant and former Lobo Maja Kovacek and senior Iva Gersic competed in the 1st round of the qualifying draw in the Coleman Vision Tennis Championships held at the Tanoan Country Club Sunday Sept. 17. The championship was part of the ITF Women’s Circuit and featured the top 500 women’s tennis players in the world.

Kovacek competed against the 8th seeded No. 344 Dimana Krastevitch from Bulgaria for a tough 7-5, 6-4 loss. Gersic matched up against No. 436 Svetlana Krivencheva, also from Bulgaria, ending in a 7-5, 7-5 loss.

“Both Maja and Iva started out a bit nervous,” said head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz. “But they were able to settle down and play good matches. They both had really tough draws but were very close to pulling off the upset. It was great experience for them to play at this level; the top 500 in the world.”

The New Mexico women’s tennis team heads to Boulder, Colo. this week for the CU Invitational. The matches will be played all day Sept 22-24 at CU’s South Campus Tennis Courts with Denver, CU and New Mexico participating.
