WACO, Texas – Despite a game one win and a late lead in game two, the Lobo volleyball team (1-3) fell, 1-3, to the Houston Cougars in the first match of the Baylor Invitational.
Houston built a 7-3 lead to start game one but a kill from freshman Allison Suiter tied the game at 10 and sparked a 4-0 Lobo run. The Cougars pulled within one at 15-16 but the redhot UNM hitters, which combined for a .342 hitting percentage, were able to hold on for a 30-24 win.
Six ties and six lead changes kept game two tight but UNM managed to gain a late lead at 24-20. However, the experienced Cougars outscored the young Lobos, 5-1, to tie the math at 25. Justine Farmer untied the game with one of her match-high 29 kills, leading Houston to a 30-27 win.
Early in game three, the Lobos held two four-point leads but again the Cougars clawed their way back, tying the game at 10. The teams traded points but trailing by one at 15-16, New Mexico committed three errors, giving UH all it needed for a 30-26 win.
The Lobos hung with Houston to start game four, trading points to a 9-9 tie. The Cougars capitalized on four straight UNM errors, surging ahead on a 8-1 run and sending them to a 30-19 victory.
Senior Kelly Therkelsen and junior Jennifer Heasty led the Lobos with 10 kills each. Therkelsen stuffed back a team-high seven blocks while Heasty hit a team-best .292 (10K-3E-24TA). Sophomore Sarah Kwasigroch notched her second double-double of the season with 44 assists and 10 digs.
The Lobos return to the court at 6:30 p.m. CT, taking on tournament host, Baylor.
