University of New Mexico men’s basketball coach Ritchie McKay announced today that freshman David Kanyinda (can-YIN-da) will be on scholarship for the 2006-07 season. Kanyinda averaged 22.6 ppg and 6.0 rpg as a senior at Albuquerque’s Sandia High School last season. He had agreed to join the Lobos as a walk-on in the fall, but will now be New Mexico’s 13th scholarship player.

“We’ve been excited about David joining our program for a while,” stated Mckay. “We were fortunate to get him to walk-on as a freshman. Our scholarship situation has now worked out in a way that allows us a chance to reward him for committing to our program.”

A 6-2, 185-pound guard, Kanyinda led New Mexico class 5A in scoring and was an all-metro selection in the city of Albuquerque as a senior at Sandia. With Kanyinda earning UNM’s last scholarship, senior Aaron Johnson will be the only walk-on on the 14-man roster for the 2006-07 season.
