University of New Mexico senior men’s soccer player Andrew Boyens was named to the 2006 Hermann Trophy Watch List as announced by the Missouri Athletic Club today. Boyens is among 25 players in Division I who are now eligible for college soccer’s top honor. A consensus All-American in 2005, Boyens was second on the team in scoring with seven goals and three assists last season and has already earned preseason All-American honors from CollegeSoccerNews.com.

A native of Dunedin, New Zealand, Boyens spent the summer with the Kiwi’s full national team. He missed the Lobos’ 4-2 exhibition win over Fort Lewis on Friday, but is back in Albuquerque, training with the team. Boyens came to UNM as a sophomore in 2004 and quickly made an impact. He was the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year in his first season in a Lobo uniform. In 2005, he started every game, setting a school record with 2,172 minutes in a season.

Boyens is the second Lobo in school history to be named to the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Watch List. Two-time All-American Jeff Rowland was one of three finalists in 2005.

The winner of the M.A.C.’s Hermann Trophy will be determined in voting by NSCAA Division I member coaches. A list of 15 semifinalists will be announced in early November, with three finalists announced in late November. They will be invited to St. Louis on Saturday, Dec. 2, for the announcement of the winner at a press conference to be held in conjunction with the Men’s College Cup. Both the men’s and women’s winners will be presented the prestigious crystal soccer ball trophy at a banquet later that evening.
