July, 14 SALINA, KS – On July, 14 New Mexico sophomore-to-be Chandler Brass won the Men’s Open Singles championship of the UMB Saline County Open tennis tournament. Brass took home the championship for the second time facing off against defending champion Nathan Martin.
“Every time we play, it’s a battle,” Brass said after hanging on for a hard-fought 6-2, 7-5 victory over Martin at Oakdale Park. “It’s stressful, but it’s fun.”
Brass and Martin each had opportunities in the second set, but Brass managed to save two break points with his serve the second of which took the lead 6-5.
“I saved a couple of break points early, and Nate saved a couple,” said Brass. “I was just going to go out and swing for the fences.” “I was lucky to pull it out because he played better than I did in the second set. I was just able to pull a couple of serves out.”
Brass will return to UNM later this month and will be a solid contributor on a young Lobos men’s tennis team in search of another MWC title and a berth into the NCAA tournament.
