PUEBLO, Colo. – University of New Mexico women’s golfer Morgan Grantham defeated Kayla Mortellaro, 4 and 3, in the opening round of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship Thursday at the par-72, 6,263-yard Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo, Colo. Grantham, who battled through the first nine, came back to dominate the back nine and advance to the second round. The Kingman, Ariz., native became one of 32 golfers to advance to Friday’s action.

Junior Alexandra Phelps had an early lead on Tiffany Chudy but was defeated, 4-3. Phelps finishes the championship after shooting a 149 to qualify for the event.

The Championship will continue Friday with the second and third rounds. Saturday will feature the quarterfinals and semifinals with the finals being played on Sunday. The remainder of the tournament will be decided by match play. For more information about the championship visit www.uswapl.org.
