ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Senior Jay Choi of the University of New Mexico men’s golf team was named a Division I PING second team All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America. It is the fifth consecutive year a Lobo has been named an All-American. Joining Choi on the second team were Ryan Blaum of Duke, Erik Flores of UCLA, Georgia State’s Mark Haastrup, Brian Harman of Georgia, Oklahoma’s Anthony Kim, Kyle Reifers of Wake Forest, Florida’s Brett Stegmaier, Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech and Lamar’s Dawie Van der Walt.
Choi finished in the top-20 in 10-of-11 tournaments this season with wins at the National Invitational Tournament and the MWC Championship. He was named All-MWC and PING All-Southwest Region in 2006. Choi finished with a stroke average of 72.58 and posted 19 rounds of par or lower.
Ryan Baca of Baylor, Arizona State’s Alejandro Cañizares, Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State, Florida’s Matt Every and Billy Horschel, Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina, Georgia’s Chris Kirk and Oklahoma State’s Pablo Martin and Jonathan Moore were previously named to the first team.
Third-team honorees include Texas Tech’s Andrew Dresser, Andres Gonzales of UNLV, Stanford’s Rob Grube, Kevin Larsen of Georgia Tech, Arizona State’s Niklas Lemke, Stephen Lewton of NC State, Washington’s Alex Prugh, Martin Ureta of North Carolina, Florida’s James Vargas and Taylor Wood of Southern California.
A total of 32 golfers were named to the honorable mention team.
