The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team is headed to the NCAA Championship where they will take on the 27th ranked Long Beach State University held at USC on May 12, 2006.

“We’re very happy with our seed,” head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said. “We were fortunate enough to see the LBSU team when we played in the San Diego State Invitational. We feel very fortunate and a little bit lucky to be there.”

The top 64 ranked teams in the nation were invited to the Championship with a total of four MWC teams included. That is the largest number of teams attending the Championship from the MWC. TCU, the top seed in the MWC, is scheduled to play Rice University. BYU is set to match up against University of Arizona and San Diego State will play UCLA.

“We’re extremely excited to be going,” Kolankiewicz said, “especially after we didn’t go last year.”

With a win New Mexico will play the winner of the University of Southern California and Army match on May 13, 2006. For the complete bracket visit NCAA Women’s Tennis Bracket. Singles and doubles brackets will be announced tomorrow, May 4, 2006.
