ALBUQUERQUE N.M. – The Mountain West Conference recently announced its 2005-06 All-Conference team and individual awards for men’s tennis. With two members on the All-MWC Singles team and one on the All-MWC Doubles squad New Mexico has had at least one doubles team and two singles players make the all-conference team every season. The MWC awards are selected by the league’s seven head coaches.

New Mexico’s Johnny Parkes was named Region VII and MWC Freshman of the Year for 2006 after he posted an impressive 22-13 record on the year. Parkes 22 wins were the most by any freshman in the MWC. Parkes played at No. 1 and No. 2 for the 2006 season posting a solid 12-7 record including going 4-2 at the No. 1 position in dual matches. Parkes selection as MWC Freshman of the Year marks the second consecutive time a Lobo has won the award with Max Jones winning in 2005. Prior to Jones, UNM had never had a Freshman of the Year. It was also the first time a Lobo has taken home the Region VII Freshman of the Year award as well. Parkes solid play also earned him a selection to the All-MWC Singles team the only freshman to earn that distinction in 2006.

Jones and teammate Kamil Pajkowski were named to the All-MWC doubles team for the first time in their careers. The duo posted a 16-8 record including winning ten in a row at one point this year.Jones was also named to the All-MWC Singles team for the second time. Jones was 21-13 on the year including 12-7 in dual matches splitting time at the No. 1 and 2 positions.
