UNM has never finished lower than second in six previous MWC championships, winning the first four titles from 2000-03. Of course, ninth-year head coach Jackie Booth has never displayed such a young team like she has in 2006. The New Mexico fivesome is comprised of three freshmen and two sophomores.
As has been the norm all season, freshman Mikaela Backstedt is leading the Lobos. She shot ever-par 72 with three birdies – all on the back – and three bogeys. Backstedt is in a five-way tie for the individual lead with BYU’s Rachel Newren and the UNLV trio of Young Pak, Seema Sadekar and Grace Woo.
Newren reached 4-under after 15 holes, but lost all four shots with a double bogey at 16 and bogeys at 17 and 18. The Cougars, who had the team lead midway through the round, played the final three holes in 12-over par. The Lobos played well coming in, going 2-over on the final three holes.
Fellow Lobo freshman Morgan Grantham is tied for seventh at 3-over 75, just one stroke shy of her career best round. Freshman Py Bengtsson was 1-over through 14 holes, but suffered bogeys on three of the last four holes to finish at 76, tied for 11th.
UNM’s two sophomores – Alexandra Phelps and Giselle Claux – had the toughest day. Phelps went out in 2-over, but played the back in 6-over to finish tied for 25th at 80. Claux had three double bogeys, two coming in the first three holes, to finish with a 10-over 82.
Second-round action gets underway Friday at 10 a.m.
