Albuquerque, N.M. – The No. 48 women’s tennis team dropped its second match of the weekend to MWC second place team, No. 33 SDSU today at the Lobo Tennis Club in a home match. New Mexico is now 13-6 and 4-3 MWC as they prepare for No. 53 UNLV.
In doubles action Lucy Scott and Ola Abou-Zekry won their match at the No. 2 spot defeating SDSU’s Aleysa Vidov and Milana Yusupov, 8-5. Junior Iva Gersic did not play in singles due to a sinus infection forcing the other players to each move up one place in singles spots. Despite that fact UNM made a strong effort in a comeback in the singles matches. The Lobos took the No. 1, 4 and 6 spots including a win from No. 39 Maja Kovacek defeating No. 84 Dita Hauerlandova. This is Kovacek’s second victory against a ranked singles player this weekend. Scott won both her matches of the day after defeating Yusupov 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Mackenzie White rounded out the singles wins with a win against Esther Cadua, 6-3, 6-4.
“We’re really proud of the fight we had out there,” head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said, “we just came up a tiny bit short. It was unfortunate that Iva got sick for the singles matches. Despite that fact, we played hard and made a good effort. I was really proud of our team.”
The Lobos have their final home match tomorrow April, 15 at 1 p.m. A senior day presentation for Maja Kovacek will begin at 1 p.m. Come out and support your Lobo women’s tennis team in their final regular season match of the season!
