SALT LAKE CITY UT – The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team was beaten 5-2 today as the Lobos opened the second weekend of the MWC schedule. UNM (10-7 1-3) fell to No. 59 SDSU (13-7 4-0) who is currently tied with TCU for first place in the Mountain West. New Mexico will look to rebound with two matches left to play on the 2006 season.

The Lobos got off to a fast start in doubles as Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby defeated Stephan Timu and Anthony Gomez 8-5 at No.2. Meanwhile Eric Conklin and Graeme Kassautzki handled Christian Groh and Eugenio Romero 8-3 at No. 3 to earn the first point of the match. #21 Benedikt Stronk and Markus Dickhardt defeated Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski at No.1 8-5.

The two teams moved over to singles competition where Lobo sophomore Jones continued his hot hand defeating Groh 6-2, 6-4 at the No.1 position. The win was Jones’s sixth in his last seven including a 3-1 record in MWC dual matches.

The rest of the match was all Aztecs as SDSU went on to win positions 2-6. Lobo senior Eric Conklin was down a set when his match was called due to an injury suffered in the second set.

UNM will return to the court tomorrow afternoon as they take on No. 56 Utah at 1 p.m.
