Provo, Utah – The No. 40 Lady Lobos (13-4, 4-1 MWC) had their first loss in the conference schedule today as they fell to No. 26 BYU in an away match at the BYU Tennis Facilities.
UNM had a rough start in the doubles losing all three matches and the doubles point to the Cougars. The Lobos were able to come back and make a strong effort in the singles matches winning three points at the No. 1, 2 and 5 spots. The 92nd ranked Iva Gersic led the Lobos at the No. 1 spot defeating Lauren Jones 6-3, 6-7, 6-1. No. 39 Maja Kovacek earned the second singles point with a defeat over No. 23 Olga Boulytcheva. The final Lobo point came from Ola Abou-Zekry at the No. 5 spot defeating Dolly Chang.
“What a match,” said head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz. “It was five hours long and about as close as it possibly could be. It was a good, hard fought match and we played with a lot of heart. The match was a good, good competitive college match. It was fun even though we lost and it will help us down the road in the next few weeks.”
