The 26th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team has the lead after the first round of the BYU Dixie Classic being played in St. George, Utah. UNM shot an 11-over 299 on the par-72 Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club, two shots better than 10th-ranked UNLV. This is the same course that will host the Mountain West Conference Championships later this month.
Sophomore Giselle Claus led a balanced Lobo attack, tying a career-low with an even-par 72. She is tied for second place despite bogeying three of the last five holes. UNLV’s Seema Sadekar leads the individual field at 2-under 70.
Lobo freshman Mikaela Backstedt is in a four-way tie for fourth place at 2-over 74. Freshman Morgan Grantham is tied for eighth at 3-over 75. Grantham also made bogey on three of the last five holes. She was followed by sophomore Alexandra Phelps (6-over 78) and freshman Py Bengtsson (7-over 79).
The second round gets underway Tuesday from 8-10 a.m. MDT.
