COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico senior Cassie Chavez was named the Mountain West Conference Softball Player of the week. It is the first weekly honor of her career.
Chavez, a native of Carlsbad, N.M., earned Most Valuable Player honors after leading the Lobos to a 4-1 record at the Lobo Classic last week. In five contests, Chavez hit .429 with seven RBI, a double, two triples and a home run. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate in both games vs. South Dakota State and recorded a .950 fielding percentage for the week at the shortstop position. Chavez currently leads New Mexico with a .393 batting average.
