Honolulu – The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team improved their record to 7-4 in 2006 with a 6-1 victory over Navy this afternoon in Honolulu. The win makes two in a row for UNM as they closed out their week in Hawaii a perfect 2-0 after rain delayed one match and canceled another. The rain held off long enough today and the Lobos cruised to an easy victory.
The match started off with UNM returning to the doubles combinations it used all season and the Lobos came out strong sweeping the doubles portion. The No. 43 ranked duo of Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski handled Nate Nelms and Brandon Carter 8-1 to improve their record to 9-1 in the spring. Eric Conklin and Graeme Kassautzki won their match at No. 3 8-3 while Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby defeated their Navy counterparts 8-5.
New Mexico didn’t let up as UNM won positions 1-5 in singles action to give the Lobos an easy victory. A switch at No. 1 and No. 2 singles took place with Parkes stepping up to No. 1 and defeating Nelms 6-1, 6-1. Jones moved to No. 2 and defeated Jason Hill 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Miles Bugby got his first start in singles action as he played at No.5 and won his match 7-5, 6-2. Navy won their only point of the match at No. 6 singles when Alex James held on against Chandler Brass 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(10-8).
New Mexico will return home on March 25 to face Northern Arizona at the UNM Tennis Complex.
