The 24th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team is tied with Indiana for fifth place after the first round of the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational. The Lobos shot a 13-over 301 on the par-72, 6,153-yard layout at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. Complete results and daily live stats are available at www.golfstat.com.

UNM trails leader Long Beach State by 12 shots. Host UNLV is second at 2-over 290 followed by Fresno State (294) and Campbell (296).

Individually, freshman Mikaela Backstedt led New Mexico with a 1-under 71 and is in a five-way tie for seventh place. She got to 3-under after 12 holes before suffering a pair of bogeys coming home.

Backstedt is three strokes behind the co-leaders, Kay Hoey from Long Beach State and Indiana’s Shannon Johnson, who shot 4-under 68. Four golfers are tied for third at 2-under 70.

Other Lobos: Freshman Morgan Grantham shot a 76 (4-over) and is tied for 28th place. Sophomore Alexandra Phelps and freshman Py Bengtsson were tied for 40th at 5-over 77 while Sophomore Giselle Claux shot an 8-over 80, tying for 68th place.

The second round gets underway Tuesday at 9 a.m. MST.
