Milwaukee, Wis. – The New Mexico Lobos defeated Ohio State 4-3 in a neutral dual match today, Feb. 4 at the Halfaer Tennis Club in Milwaukee, Wis. This is their 7th consecutive win for the season with a record of 7-1, 0-0 MWC. Their only loss was the first dual match against No. 24 Arizona State.
The Lobos came out strong again in the doubles matches winning all 3 spots. The 3rd ranked duo of Iva Gersic and Maja Kovacek dominated the No. 1 doubles play with an easy victory over Sonia Ruzimovsky and Angela DiPastina, 8-3. The No. 49 tandem of Lucy Scott and Ola Abou-Zekry defeated Caitlin O’Keefe and Ciara Finucane in a close 9-8 match. To round off the doubles matches Jennifer Ryba and Nora Quintal had a win over OSU’s Julie Blackmore and Kristin Messmer 8-6.
The singles matches proved to be more difficult but the Lobos rallied and came out with the 3 wins needed to clinch the match. Kovacek and Gersic led the Lobos winning their matches in two sets each. Kovacek defeated O’Keefe 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot and Gersic had a win against Ruzimovsky 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. OSU took the No. 3, 4 and 5 singles spots, but Ryba came away with a tough win against DiPastina 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot.
Next up is an away match for the Lobos. They play Marquette tomorrow, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. at the Halfaer Tennis Club.
