Long Adds Two To 2006 Lobo Football Coaching Staff

March 2, 2006

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of New Mexico head football coach Rocky Long announced today the hiring of offensive line coach Bob Stanley and tight ends coach Todd Throckmorton. Stanley spent the past four years in the same capacity at Kansas State University and brings 38 years of coaching experience to the staff, including time at Texas A&M, TCU, Texas, and Purdue. Throckmorton was the offensive line coach at Missouri Western State College from 2004-05 and previously head coach at Fort Lewis College.

“Both of these coaches have great experience recruiting our areas and have been successful throughout their career,” Long said. “I’m very pleased to be able to add two coaches of their caliber to our staff and we’re all eager to get to work and get ready for spring practice.”

Stanley replaces former offensive line coach Bob Bostad, who accepted a position at Wisconsin. Throckmorton fills the opening left by former safeties coach Grady Stretz, who accepted a position at Arizona State.

Stanley, 60, has spent the past 36 years coaching offensive linemen, including two stints at Kansas State (2002-05, 1999-2001), under recently retired head coach Bill Snyder. While at Kansas State he recruited central and east Texas.

Last fall, senior tackle Jeromey Clary earned all-Big 12 honors for the second straight season and freshman center Jordan Bedore earned a spot on The Sporting News’ Big 12 all-Freshman team. During the 2004 season, three of Stanley’s charges earned all-Big 12 honors.

After rejoining the K-State staff in January of 2003, Stanley directed the offensive line to a No. 9 national ranking in rushing offense, a ninth-place ranking in scoring offense and the No. 17 spot in total offense. The offense was one of seven in the country to average over 200 yards per game in both rushing and passing. Stanley’s offensive line also helped Darren Sproles become the nation’s leading rusher with 1,986 yards in 2003. Sproles also set single-season and single-game school rushing records, while Stanley’s offensive line ranked first in the Big 12 in sacks allowed per game. At the conclusion of the 2003 season, Stanley saw four of his offensive linemen earn some type of all-conference honor, including Nick Leckey, who was a consensus first team all-Big 12 selection, finalist for the Rimington Trophy and a first team All-American by ESPN.com.

Stanley went to K-State from Irving (Texas) High School where he was the assistant head coach/offensive line coach from 1998-99. He also served assistant coaching stints at Temple (offensive line, 1996-97) and Akron (offensive line, 1991-94). From 1987-90, he worked as the offensive line coach at Purdue, including three seasons as the offensive coordinator. Stanley also served as the offensive line coach at Vanderbilt (1983-85), Texas (1986), TCU (1982) and Texas A&M (1973-82). His first high school coaching job came at Alice (Texas) High School, where he was a defensive coordinator for head coach (and former Texas Tech head coach) Spike Dykes.

During his playing career at Texas, Stanley earned three letters. In 1966, he helped the Longhorns to a Bluebonnet Bowl appearance. Stanley earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Texas in 1968. He and his wife, Debbie, have five grown children, Misty, Gretchen, Summer, Matt and Christopher.

Throckmorton, 40, comes to New Mexico after two years coaching the offensive line in his second stint at Division II Missouri Western State. The Griffons finished 9-3 last fall and ranked 25th in the country in 2005. Throckmorton’s unit, which included four all-conference honorees, paved the way for All-American running back Jeremiah White to set the school rushing record last year with 1,801 yards (150.1 per game).

From 2000-04, Throckmorton was the head football coach at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. Throckmorton’s four-year head coaching tenure at Fort Lewis included a 11-33 overall record, a 7-25 mark in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, 30 All-RMCA selections, 14 Academic All-RMAC selections and two RMAC Freshman of the Year award winners. As head coach, the Skyhawks were one of the most dominant offensive teams in the league, leading Division II in passing offense (373.5 yards per game) during the 2002 season.

Prior to Fort Lewis, Throckmorton was at San Jose State, where he was an assistant coach for three seasons. He served as defensive coordinator for the Spartans in 1998 and 1999, and worked with inside linebackers all three years.

Throckmorton spent seven years at Missouri Western from 1990-96, coaching a variety of positions for the Griffons, including wide receiver, offensive line and linebackers. He was Missouri Western’s assistant head coach during the 1996 season.

Throckmorton was as a graduate assistant coach at the University of South Dakota and while at East Tennessee State University, he was the restricted earnings coach, responsible for tight ends and tackles.

A former offensive and defensive lineman at Missouri Western, Throckmorton received his bachelors degree in physical education in 1987. He graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1989 with a masters degree in physical education.
