University of New Mexico vs. San Diego State University
February 25, 2006
The Pit, Albuquerque, NM
Head Coach Ritchie McKay
Regarding Brandon Heath’s play:
“Brandon Heath is an excellent player. He made his shots
tonight and that makes him look that much better. We’ve
obviously played him for three years and we know his
capabilities, he made some long shots tonight and helped
their team win.”
Comparing the play of Mark Walters and Brandon Heath:
“He (Brandon Heath) had a better shooting night than Mark
(Walters) did. I’ve been coaching Mark for four years I
think he’s the best guard in the league. I know he’s
disappointed in the locker room, frustrated, he had a
tough shooting night. He never got his rhythm. Brandon is
certainly an excellent guard, but I’d take Mark Walters
any day of the week.”
Regarding rebounding:
“I thought Joel (Box) had a great first half but we let it
get away from us in the second half. Our discipline, our
execution was poor. That’s my responsibility and I will
take care of that for Wednesday.”
SDSU Head Coach Steve Fisher
Regarding what was said in the locker room at half time:
“I told them, to play the way we did inside and not be
able to contain (Joel) Box in particular, 31-31 at half
time, you have to feel good about yourselves. But you
have to change some things in the second half. If we
don’t let them have a free reign inside we’ll win this
game by double figures. So go out and do what you’re
capable of doing. And we were better at defensive
rebounds in the second half, obviously.”
Regarding Brandon Heath:
“We have plays that we run for him. Brandon (Heath) was
the difference offensively. He made basket after basket
to allow us to separate. When you have that it puts more
pressure on your opponent. They feel as if they have to
shoot it a little bit quicker and each possession becomes
magnified. We caught a break with the way he got that hot
hand.”
