SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, HAWAII – The Lobo men’s golf team moved up four spots on the final day of the John Burns Intercollegiate to finish in third place. New Mexico shot a final round 13-under par 275 to finish at 34-under par (279-276-275=830) on the par-72, 6,917 yard Leilehua Golf Course in Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. The team title went to SMU who finished at 41-under par one stroke in front of BYU.
Freshman Steve Saunders led the Lobos with a career-best tie for seventh. Saunders, a native of Albuquerque, finished at 11-under par (69-67-69=205). The best round of the day for UNM was a 67 by freshman Travis Reid, who finished tied for 37th at 5-under par (72-72-67=211). Other New Mexico results were senior Jay Choi tied for 12th at 10-under par (69-69-68=206), junior Charlie Beljan tied for 37th at 5-under par (71-68-72=211), senior Mark Anderson tied for 42nd at 3-under par and freshman Nick Geyer, playing as an individual, tied for 56th at 2-under par.
Medalist honors went to Brandon DeStefano of SMU who defeated Jay Moseley of Auburn on the second hole of a playoff. Both players finished the tournament at 14-under par.
Next up for the Lobos is the Las Vegas Intercollegiate on March 10-12.
