The University of New Mexico ski team sits in third place after four events at the 2006 NCAA West Regional/Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Championship in Reno, Nev., today. The Lobos posted 266 points and trail meet-leading Colorado (284) and second-place Denver (275). The University of Alaska-Anchorage is in fourth place with 226 points.
The women’s Nordic squad finished their 5K Classic race in second place overall with 70 points. Sophomore Marit Rognmo had a strong showing with a fifth place finish (15:27.4), followed immediately by freshman Crystin Jacques in sixth place (15:37.1). Freshman Melanie Zemp was the next Lobo to cross in the line in 13th place (15:58.7). Colorado won the event with a total of 80 points led by Jana Reheema’s winning time of 14:46.5.
The Nordic men totaled 63 points in their 10K Classic event, placing third overall. Senior Geir-Endre Rogn and junior Dirk Grimm placed fourth (26:43.4) and fifth (27:13.2), respectively. Freshman Casey Dyck also scored for UNM, placing 25th (29:12.1). Colorado won the event, led by race winner Henrik Hoye (26:25.0).
On the men’s Alpine side, freshman Tor Fodnesbergene won his second-straight giant slalom race with a two-run time of 1:52.80. Junior Lars Loeseth skied to a fourth place finish (1:53.40) while junior Alex Mach placed 12th (1:54.73). The Lobo men won the event with 74 points.
The women’s team was led by sophomore Amy Beresford’s time of 2:03.19, putting her in fifth place, her best finish of the season. Senior Gladys Weidt bolstered her chances for an NCAA appearance with an 11th place finish (2:04.02). Freshman Karin Ohlin rounded out the women’s scoring with a 21st place finish (2:05.99). The women scored 58.5 points, placing fourth overall.
“We’re not out of it yet,” stated UNM head coach George Brooks. “Things are tight at the top and anything can happen in the slalom. We’re going to need some strong runs, but we are still in the race.”
The NCAA West Regional/RMISA Championships conclude tomorrow with the Nordic freestyle and Alpine slalom events.
