Las Cruces, N.M. – The 38th ranked University of New Mexico women’s tennis team (5-1) defeated instate rival New Mexico State (5-2) 6-1 today in Las Cruces, N.M. at the NMSU Tennis Center. UNM’s win ended a four game winning streak for the Aggies.
The Lobos dominated the doubles matches as they have been most of the season, winning all three spots. The 3rd ranked duo of Iva Gersic and Maja Kovacek played at the No. 1 spot defeating Isabelle Mignot and Edine van Beusekom 8-4. The tandems of Lucy Scott and Ola Abou-Zekry at the No. 2 spot and Nora Quintal and Jennifer Ryba at the No. 3 spots both defeated their opponents, Nicole Fintell Celine du Fosse and Violaine Rollet and Pauina Zuniga 8-4 taking the doubles point.
UNM faltered slightly in the singles matches but were still able to come away with five of the six singles points. No. 20 Kovacek took the No. 1 spot after winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 against Mignot. At the No. 2 spot 45th ranked Gersic came a way with a win against van Beusekom 6-2, 6-2. Quintal had success at the No. 3 spot defeating Fintell 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Scott took her opponent out in two sets defeating du Fosse 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot. To finish out the singles Mackenzie White at the No. 6 spot defeated Zuniga 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
No. 38 New Mexico will take on Oklahoma State University tomorrow Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11:30 a.m. in a neutral match at the NMSU Tennis Center.
