Colorado Springs, Colo. – Sophomore Ola Abou-Zekry was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week the league office announced today. This is the first time a New Mexico women’s tennis player has receive the award this season.
Abou-Zekry is in her first year with New Mexico after transferring in the fall from Cairo University. Last weekend Abou-Zekry won all four matches she competed in at the Lobo Tennis Club and helped No. 38 New Mexico defeat UTEP, 7-0 and No. 60 Texas Tech, 6-1. The Cairo, Egypt native won both of her No. 3 singles matches with victories against UTEP’s Katherine Palider (6-4, 6-1) and Texas Tech’s Janet Durham (6-0, 6-4). In doubles she teamed with Maja Kovacek against UTEP at the No. 2 spot winning 8-6. Against Texas Tech Abou-Zekry teamed with Lucy Scott to defeat a ranked team for the second time this season. They overtook No. 23 Katja Kovacic and Erin Hunter at the No. 2 doubles spot 8-6.
With wins over UTEP and No. 60 Texas Tech New Mexico moved up one spot in the FILA national rankings from a No. 39 ranking to No. 38.
