Albuquerque, N.M. – The No. 39 New Mexico women’s tennis team (4-1) stopped the 60th ranked Texas Tech’s undefeated run after winning 6-1 against the Raiders (4-1) today at the Lobo Tennis Club.
The Lobos seemed to be in for a ride as they began their day playing doubles against the Raiders. Texas Tech’s Cigdem Duru and Janet Durham defeated Nora Quintal and Jennifer Ryba 8-4 at the No. 3 spot. Shortly after, Lucy Scott and Ola Abou-Zekry defeated a ranked team for the second time this season after winning the No. 2 doubles match against No. 23 Katja Kovacic and Erin Hunter 8-6. The No. 3 ranked duo of Iva Gersic and Maja Kovacek took the doubles point after defeating Tara Browning and Lakahn Wagley at the No. 1 spot.
New Mexico picked up speed once again as the singles matches began winning five of six singles points. Abou-Zekry had a strong win at the No. 3 spot against Durham, 6-0, 6-4, while Gersic also easily defeated her opponent Duru 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot. Mackenzie White took the No. 6 singles point despite having a close first set 7-5, 6-3. Quintal earned the No. 4 spot defeating the Kovacic 6-4, 6-3 and Kovacek rounded out the singles with a win against No. 75 Browning 6-3, 5-7 (10-6).
“I’m really impressed that we were able to come off of this match with a 6-1 win,” said head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz. “I felt this team had big, strong, aggressive players who were fired up to play, and to only lose one match to a team that I think really looked good says a lot about our team.”
New Mexico travels to Las Cruces next week to play in an away match against New Mexico State on Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. and in a neutral match against Oklahoma State Feb. 18 at 10 a.m.
