The University of New Mexico ski team finished in third place at the Western State Invite today in Gunnison, Colo. The Lobos were led by a strong performance from the women’s Nordic team, placing three skiers in the top-10. Freshman Tor Fodnesbergene won his first giant slalom race of the season to lead the Men’s Alpine squad.

The Lobo women’s Nordic team won an event for the first time this season thanks to freshman Melanie Zemp’s season-high third place time of 18:08.0 in the 5K classic. She was just off the winning pace of 17:53.8 set by Colorado’s Jana Rehemaa. Freshman Crystin Jacques was right behind Zemp in fourth place, her best showing of the season. Sophomore Marit Rognmo rounded out the Lobo scorers with another top-10, placing seventh. The women posted 79 points in the event to edge Colorado’s 77.

Senior Geir-Endre Rogn continued his strong weekend with a second place finish in the men’s 10K classic, tying a career-high he set last year at Colorado. His time of 29.29.3 was less than five seconds behind race winner Kit Richmond of Colorado (29.25.9). Junior Dirk Grimm placed fourth in the race, his new career-high in a classic race, and fellow junior Jedd Young posted a 12th place finish. Overall the men finished second in the race with 76 points, trailing only Denver’s 79.

On the Alpine side, the Lobo men stumbled to a fifth place finish in the giant slalom, despite Fodnesbergene’s win. Junior Lars Loeseth (17th) and Alex Mach (22nd) had the other two scoring runs.

The women’s team also finished fifth in their slalom race and were led by freshman Karin Ohlin’s fifth place showing. Sophomore Vibeke Vilhelmsen posted her best mark of the season with a 14th place finish while senior Kathrin Spendier rounded out the Lobo scoring in 18th place.

Overall the Lobos recorded 526 points, trailing Denver (556) and Colorado (600) in the meet. UNM will next travel to Reno, Nev., for the NCAA West Regional on Feb. 23-24.
