The University of New Mexico ski team sits in third place after the first day of the Western State Invite in Gunnison, Colo., today. The Lobos scored 259 points in four events, trailing Colorado (309) and Denver (285) in the meet. Utah is in fourth place with a total of 229 points.

The men’s Nordic team was led by senior Geir-Endre Rogn’s fourth place finish in the men’s 10K freestyle. It was Rogn’s best showing of the 2006 season. Junior Dirk Grimm also had a top-10 finish, placing seventh in the race. Freshman Casey Dyck also had his best result as a Lobo, finishing 12th. Junior Jedd Young and freshman Rick Grahn also raced for the Lobos, placing 16th and 30th, respectively.

The women’s Nordic squad was led by sophomore Laura Van Alst’s fourth place time. It was also her best finish of 2006. Sophomore Marit Rognmo placed eighth while freshman Crystin Jacques rounded out the Lobo scoring with a season-high ninth place showing. Freshman Melanie Zemp (16th) and sophomore Kathrine Alseen (22nd) also raced for New Mexico today.

In the men’s Alpine, junior Lars Loeseth recorded a fourth place mark in the men’s slalom. He was followed by junior Alex Mach (11th) and freshman Tyson McGinty (25th). It was McGinty’s first scoring run of the season. Freshman Tor Fodnesbergene also raced for the Lobos, stumbling to a 43rd place finish in the meet.

The women’s Alpine team skied in the giant slalom today and was led by sophomore Vibeke Vilhelmsen’s eighth place showing, her best best mark of the season. Sophomore Amy Beresford’s also had two strong runs, placing ninth in the race. It was Beresford’s first top-10 result of the season. Senior Gladys Weidt was the next fastest Lobo, coming in 18th overall, followed by freshman Karin Ohlin in 19th place. Senior Kathrin Spendier placed 22nd and was the only other Lobo to complete two runs.

UNM finishes the Western State meet tomorrow with Nordic freestyle and Alpine giant slalom races. This is the final Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association meet of the season before the NCAA West Regional in Reno, Nev., on Feb. 23-24. The Lobos are currently in third place in the RMISA standings.
