The University of New Mexico ski team finished second in the CU/Laura Sharpe Flood Memorial Ski Invitational this weekend, earning the team’s best showing of the 2006 season. New Mexico earned 544 points in the meet, trailing the host Buffaloes total of 592. Defending NCAA champion Denver placed third with 531.5 points.

Racing in Steamboat Springs, Colo., members of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association were able to test the same runs that will host the 2006 NCAA Championships in March. The Lobo men’s Alpine team had another impressive day with two top-10 finishers. Junior Lars Loeseth placed fourth in the men’s giant slalom while freshman Tor Fodnesbergene finished seventh. Junior Alex Mach rounded out the Lobo scoring with a 12th place showing. Sophomore Tyson McGinty had his best race of the year, placing 23rd.

UNM had swept the two previous men’s giant slalom races, but finished third today, mainly due to the loss of junior Peter Roering. Roering posted a win and a fifth place finish in the two previous RMISA giant slalom events and was the top-ranked GS skier in the conference. However, he suffered a season-ending broken leg while training last week, leaving New Mexico shorthanded.

Freshman Karin Ohlin led the Lobo women with her second-straight top-5 finish in the slalom. She placed third, the highest finish of any New Mexico woman this season. Senior Kathrin Spendier had her second top-10 finish of the season, placing 10th, while senior Gladys Weidt finished 13th. Sophomore Amy Beresford (30th) was the only other Lobo to finish two runs.

New Mexico was picked to finish third in the NCAA this season, according to the Ski Racing Magazine preseason top-10. Prior to the CU Invite, the Lobos were in fifth place overall in the RMISA. Thanks to their second place showing at Colorado, the UNM has vaulted into third in the RMISA race. Colorado leads the overall standings with 1,708 points, followed by Denver (1,652.5), New Mexico (1,473), Alaska-Anchorage (1,436.5) and Utah (1,426.5). The Lobos will next travel to Gunnison and Crested Butte, Colo., for the Western State College meet on Feb. 10-11.
