Seattle, Wash. – The No. 47 New Mexico women’s tennis team captured its first win of the season today after shutting out the University of Portland, 7-0, in a neutral match at the University of Washington’s Nordstrom Tennis Center.
New Mexico (1-1) came in ready to defeat the unranked Portland Pilots (0-4) after last week’s loss. The Lobos earned the doubles point after winning the No. 1 and 2 matches. The first time partners in team competition, Iva Gersic and Lucy Scott, teamed up at the No. 1 spot defeating Lindsey Griffin and Cristin Sammis, 8-4.
No. 45 Gersic at the No. 2 spot and Scott at the No. 5 spot also won their singles points. Gersic and Scott both easily won their matches 6-0, 6-1 after defeating Jackie Soltysik and Katie Kennel.
At the No. 2 doubles Maja Kovacek and Ola Abou-Zekry beat out Genna Tanzer and Katie Kennel, 8-3. No. 20 Kovacek earned her No. 1 singles point after opponent Sammis retired from the match, 6-3, 5-0, ret. Abou-Zekry earned her No. 3 singles point with a shut out against Genna Tanzer 6-0, 6-0.
Nora Quintal had her first singles win of the spring season at the No. 4 position against Griffin 7-6, 6-3 while Mackenzie White sealed the singles points at No. 6 with an easy wing against Laura Leoni 6-1, 6-4.
“It was nice to get our first win,” said head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz. “This was good preparation for our match against Washington tomorrow.”
The Lobos will face the 26th ranked University of Washington tomorrow at 10 a.m.
