Notes
New Mexico Head Coach Ritchie McKay
“BYU did a great job of executing their game plan and they are a hot team in the conference, and obviously they played better than we did and were successful in winning the game.”
On having Mark Walters on the bench for the last five minutes
“Pretty much for the last half, very tough.”
On Joel Box giving a spark in the first half
“I felt like he’s learned some things. He’s not a complete player yet but he did give us a spark and I was proud of him.”
On Mark Walters picking up his fifth foul
“Mark was aggressive which was part of our game plan.
Joel (Box) didn’t stay with (Trent) Plaisted so Mark had to switch because Joel didn’t stay with Plaisted. We don’t want to give up a lay up and I’m sure Mark didn’t anticipate getting a foul. I feel like if they can body you at one end and you can’t body them at the other end then I feel like he was probably playing what he saw, I mean he had a good look on the bench. He had a good look at how the game was being officiated, but then again I don’t want to take anything away from BYU. They did a good job coming in here and winning. The third time they broke our streak and hopefully we’ll pay them back when we get to Provo.”
BYU Head Coach Dave Rose
“It was a gut win for us, we gutted it out. We got ourselves in a tough position where we got stuck on 62 but we finished the game off good. I was proud of them.”
On how Mark Walters fouling out affected their game plan
“They’ve had a lot of really good, close games here this year and Mark Walters seemed to be the one who has made really big plays for them at the end. When he fouled out I knew that we would just have to see who else would step it up and make the play and they did a pretty good job.
But I thought that was obviously one of the big differences in the game.”
Regarding the collective effort of BYU
“This was a huge part of a schedule and a big part of our season, and I think that we got a good performance from seven, eight, nine guys and we went with them.”
