The University of New Mexico ski team slid into second place at Colorado following the Nordic freestyle races today. Junior Dirk Grimm won his second-consecutive Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association freestyle race with a 58:10.1 time in the men’s 20K. Sophomore Marit Rognmo collected another top-10, placing fourth in the women’s 15K. The Lobo have totaled 265 points after four Nordic events and trail Colorado who leads with 321 points. UNM has a narrow lead over defending national champion Denver’s 261 points.
Grimm led a strong men’s showing that included an eighth place finish by senior Geir-Endre Rogn. The Lobo men’s 71 points put them in third place in the event, their best showing of the season. Junior Jedd Young skied to a 13th place finish, the second highest mark of his career. Freshmen Rick Grahn (33rd) and Casey Dyck (37th) also skied for the Lobo men today.
Rognmo posted a time of 50:30.4, just over a minute behind the pace set by Colorado’s race winner Lenka Palanova (49:21.7). Sophomores Laura Van Alst (9th) and Kathrine Alseen (11th) also scored for UNM in the women’s race. Freshmen Crystin Jacques (15th) and Melanie Zemp (25th) also skied for UNM today.
The Alpine squad will hit the slopes in Steamboat Springs, Colo., next weekend to conclude the Colorado meet.
