The University of New Mexico ski team finished the first day of the Colorado Invitational in third place following the men’s and women’s Nordic classic races in Steamboat Springs, Colo. The Lobos posted 125 points and trail Colorado (163) and Denver (148) and lead Alaska-Anchorage (106).

The men’s squad was led by junior Dirk Grimm’s 5th place time of 28:19.6 in the 10K. Denver’s John Stene won the race with a mark of 27:30.3. Senior Geir-Endre Rogn placed 11th in his first collegiate race of the season, finishing the course in 28:59.3. He rejoined the Lobos at the start of the spring semester last week after training in Europe during the fall semester. Junior Jedd Young finished out the Lobo scoring with a 27th-place time of 30:45.6. Also racing for the Lobos were freshmen Casey Dyck (30th – 30:01.1) and Rick Grahn (48th – 35:05.3).

The Lobo women had a strong showing today led by sophomore Marit Rognmo. She placed fifth in the 5K with a time of 16:32.9. Colorado’s Maria Grevsgaard took the top spot, finishing in 15:29.1. Freshman Crystin Jacques also had a top-10 finish, placing eighth with a 16:40.9 mark. Sophomore Laura Van Alst continues her strong season with a time of 17:01.8, placing 12th overall. Freshman Melanie Zemp did not score for UNM but had a top-20 showing, coming in 14th overall with a time of 17:04.2. Freshman Kathrine Alseen (22nd – 17:28.2), also raced for the Lobos today.

The meet continues tomorrow with the Nordic freestyle races. The Alpine teams will ski Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4, in their giant slalom and slalom races in Steamboat Springs.
