The University of New Mexico ski team scored its second fifth-place finish of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association season, netting 438 points in the two-day Montana State Invite this weekend. Denver won for the second time this season with 568 points, followed by Colorado (565), Alaska-Anchorage (521) and Utah (476). The Lobos posted two individual wins in the final day with junior Dirk Grimm winning the men’s Nordic 15K freestyle while fellow junior Alex Mach won the Alpine men’s slalom.
This is Grimm’s second win at Montana State, also taking the men’s freestyle race last season at the NCAA West Regional at Bohart Ranch. He finished the course in 48:59.9, just one second ahead of the UAA’s Brian Gregg. Junior Jedd Young placed 18th while freshman Casey Dyck finished 23rd to complete the men’s scoring. Freshman Rick Grahn also raced in the event, placing 37th.
The Lobo women’s Nordic squad was led by sophomore Marit Rognmo (7th), freshman Melanie Zemp (15th) and sophomore Laura Van Alst (21st). Freshman Crystin Jacques and sophomore Kathrine Alseen also raced for New Mexico, placing 24th and 25th, respectively.
Mach won his first collegiate race in the men’s slalom, Sunday. He was the only Lobo in the top-10, surprising for a squad that had dominated all three previous RMISA Alpine races. Freshman Tyson McGinty placed 33rd in the race while junoir Peter Roering placed 43rd. Roering, junior Lars Loeseth (46th) and freshman Tor Fodnesbergene (DNF) all fell during their slalom runs.
Freshman Karin Ohlin was the only member of the Lobo women’s Alpine team to score a top-10 in the slalom, placing fifth. It was her best finish of the season. Senior Gladys Weidt just missed the top-10 with a 12th=place showing while senior Kathrin Spendier scored a 15th place finish. Freshman Vibeke Vilhelmsen placed 18th in the race while sophomore Amy Beresford finished 30th.
The Lobos will take next weekend off before heading to Colorado for the Buffaloes RMISA meet. The Nordic teams will compete in Steamboat Springs, Colo., on Jan. 27-28, while the Alpine squads will also race in Steamboat Springs on Feb. 3-4.
