The University of New Mexico men’s Alpine continues to dominate the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association slopes, winning the Montana State giant slalom today. Lobo junior Peter Roering scored his third top-10 in as many races in 2006, winning the men’s GS in Bozeman, Mont. As a team, New Mexico struggled to a fifth place finish after the first day of the meet, scoring 219 points in four events. Denver continues to lead the RMISA race, totaling 300 points today.
Roering enjoys the MSU giant slalom course, winning for the second time in as many tries. He also took home the 2005 NCAA West Regional title last season in Bozeman. Freshman Tor Fodnesbergene, the 69th ranked slalom skier in the world, has recorded a pair of top-10’s in the GS so far in 2006. He placed fourth in the GS today. Junior Lars Loeseth had another solid showing with a seventh place finish while fellow junior Alex Mach placed 12th. Freshman Tyson McGinty also raced for UNM today, finishing 32nd.
The women’s Alpine team was led by freshman Vibeke Vilhelmsen’s 15th place finish in their GS race. Freshman Karin Ohlin placed 23rd while senior Kathrin Spendier was the only other Lobo to finish two runs, placing 43rd.
The Nordic teams competed in classic races at Bohart Ranch in Bozeman. The Lobo men were led by junior Dirk Grimm’s eight-place result, his third top-10 of the year. Fellow junior Jedd Young placed 19th while freshman Casey Dyck came in 22nd in the men’s 10K. Also racing for the Lobo men was freshman Rick Grahn (36th).
The women’s Nordic team raced a 5K classic and was led by freshman Crystin Jacques’ ninth place finish. It was her first top-10 in three races as a Lobo. Freshman Melanie Zemp also had a solid showing, finishing 11th. Sophomore Laura Van Alst continued her surprising start with a 16th place finish while sophomore Marit Rognmo finished 22nd. Sophomore Kathrine Alseen also skied for UNM today, placing 24th.
The Lobos conclude the MSU Invite tomorrow with the Alpine slalom events and the Nordic freestyle races.
