The University of New Mexico ski team closed the gap on fourth place with a strong showing by the Alpine men in the third day of racing at the Alaska-Anchorage meet in Park City, Utah. Junior Lars Loeseth started the season off with a second place run in the men’s giant slalom, leading a quartet of Lobos in the top-10.

Lobo soccer fans remembers Loeseth’s three goals and five assists in his first season on the pitch last fall, but the 5-10 midfielder has already earned a pair of All-American awards on the slopes as a part of the UNM ski team. Fellow junior Peter Roering scored a fifth placing showing while freshman Tor Fodnesbergene placed seventh in his first collegiate race. Also skiing for the Lobos were junior Alex Mach (9th) and sophomore Tyson McGinty (53rd).

Seniors Kathrin Spendier and Gladys Weidt led the Lobo women with sixth and ninth place finishes, respectively. Also scoring points for UNM was sophomore Amy Beresford who placed 24th. Freshman Karin Ohlin placed 27th while sophomore Vibeke Vilhelmsen fellin her first run.

The Lobos conclude the UAA Invite tomorrow with the men’s slalom and the women’s giant slalom in Park City.
