UNM Head Coach Ritchie McKay

“Man I was proud of our guys. When we have an off night shooting we have not had success. I’m really proud of our team. I think we went down 54-47, so to get the last nine the guys we had on the floor; Joel Box hadn’t played in crunch time yet, Prentice did great off the bench, I really thought David Chiotti played well. He did well on the interior.”

“TCU had to adjust. They weren’t double teaming Dave and then they started to sink. That opened up our parameter a little bit. We could just not make shots. I was concerned down the stretch and then Kersten made some huge plays. We uncharacteristically put a zone down the stretch, we grinded down in ways that we usually don’t.
For that I am thankful.”

(Regarding the uncharacteristic zone play use)
“We had to go into a zone because we couldn’t stay in front. Mark got in foul trouble and I didn’t think we could win the game with Mark on the bench. So we thought we just needed to hide him down on the base line a little bit because that is not where TCU was scoring. They were scoring from out front or on the baseline. We did it as a necessity more than anything.”

TCU Head Coach Neil Dougherty

“Well it was an exciting game to watch, that’s for sure. It was definitely a game I typically call fighting in the family in terms of conference games. Teams are going to battle back and forth, one play separates winning from losing. From the fans perspective, I don’t know if you could ask for a better game. From our perspective we came up one play short. We have to credit New Mexico for that.

(On Darren Prentice’s performance)
“We definitely had him on the scouting sheets so we were preparing to play against him. I think the young man played very well. He hit some big shots but I think we had a couple people that probably made some shots that maybe they were surprised at. When you have someone have a good game like that I don’t think surprise is a word you should use, particularly someone who is just beginning.”
