The University of New Mexico’s bid for a national championship came up just short today as top-seeded Maryland escaped with a 1-0 victory over the Lobos at the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship at SAS Soccer Stadium in Cary, N.C. UNM was the No. 2 seed in the field.
The lone goal of the game came in the 31st minute when Maryland’s Marc Burch scored on a free kick that eluded Lobo keeper Mike Graczyk.
UNM had a great opportunity to tie the game early in the second period following a Maryland hand-ball violation in the box. Andrew Boyens took the penalty kick, but his attempt was blocked by Terps’ freshman goalkeeper Chris Seitz. Boyens’ shot off the rebound sailed over the goal.
New Mexico was shut out for only the second time in 2005. UNM finishes a magical season with an 18-2-3 record. Maryland, winning its first national title since 1968, ends at 19-4-2.
