FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The University of New Mexico swimming & diving team fell today in a dual meet against the Lumberjacks of NAU with a final score of 190-107. The Lumberjacks won 14 of the 16 events. Senior Robyn Miller and sophomore Andrea Zarins were the top swimmers for the Lobos. Miller placed first in the 200-yard butterfly with a final time of 2:23.31. In the 200-yard breaststroke Zarins took the first place victory with a final time of 2:46.45.
UNM’s `A’ team in the 200-yard medley relay, which included junior Jenna Syverson, sophomores Tori Clarridge and Rachel Evans and freshman Kristen Naber, placed second with a time of 2:05.09. Other second place finishers for the Lobos were Zarins, in the 200-yard freestyle (2:13.16), Syverson, in the 50-yard free (27.84) and junior Jan Hale in the 100-yard fly (1:08.41). Miller also placed second in the 400-yard free with a time of 4:33.51 and in the 200-yard individual medley with a final time of 2:27.75. Freshman Blakely Stephens, Zarins, Syverson and senior Kelsey Leckovic made up the second place finishing team for the Lobos in the 400-yard free relay finishing with a time of 4:06.74.
Clarridge was the first swimmer for the Lobos to finish in the 100-yard backstroke coming in third place with a time of 1:09.05. Evans took third in the 100-yard breast, finishing with a time of 1:20.16. Other third place finishers for the Lobos included freshman Katrina McLoughlin who finished with a time of 2:39.90 in the 200-yard fly, junior Soldow in the 100-yard free with a time of 1:02.42, sophomore Ashley LaBree in the 200-yard breast with a final time of 2:58.31 and freshman Amina Adnan in the 400-yard free finishing with a time of 4:50.35. Junior Katy Vandam had two third place finishes, the first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:32.37) and the second in the 200-yard IM (2:35.94).
The top divers for the Lobos were sophomores Carrie Quinn and Tiffany Blackstone. Quinn placed second on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 241.43 and Blackstone placed fifth in the same event with a score of 190.05. On the 3-meter springboard Quinn took fourth (224.33) and Blackstone took fifth (204.83).
The over-all series between NAU and UNM is now tied at 10-10.
The Lobos have now completed the fall portion of the 2005-06 season and will be back in action Jan. 13, 2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Competition will begin at 5 p.m. The following day the women will be in Provo, Utah when they compete against the ladies of BYU. Competition for this meet will begin at 12 p.m.
