With the second round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament just around the corner, the Lobo men’s soccer team earned more accolades today, and this time it was for their work in the classroom. Four student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American honors, including seniors Ben Ashwill, Brandon Moss, Jeff Rowland and Matt Wootton. UNM’s four selections were the most of any team in the country.

Ashwill, Rowland, and Wootton all earned spots on the first team and no other team in the nation had more than one player on the first team. Ashwill is the Lobos’ first three-time Academic All-American while Rowland and Wootton both earn their second honors. Moss earned a spot on the third-team for his first Academic All-American award. The Lobo men’s soccer team posted a 3.35 team grade-point-average in the 2005 Spring semester, setting a new program high.

The Lobos, ranked No. 1 in three of the four final regular season polls, grabbed the No. 2 seed in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. New Mexico faces Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the UNM Soccer Complex on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 7:00 p.m. (M.S.T.).
