University of New Mexico men’s soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-Coach of the Year along with Michael Linenberger of Sacramento State. The Lobos (15-1-2, 7-1-2 MPSF) won their fourth MPSF title in five years and their third under Fishbein. Fishbein was the 2004 Soccer America National Coach of the Year and the 2002 MPSF Coach of the Year. Eight Lobos earned spots on the All-MPSF teams, including a league-leading four on the first team.
Senior Jeff Rowland and junior Andrew Boyens, the 2004 MPSF co-Players of the Year, were both repeat performers on the first team, along with fellow senior Lance Watson. Senior Brandon Moss made his fourth-straight appearance on an All-MPSF squad and his second first-team showing. Rowland, a 2005 Hermann Troph semifinalist, led the MPSF with 29 point on 13 goals and three assists. The 2005 MPSF Player of the Year honor went to UNLV’s Rod Dyachenko. Dyachenko scored 17 points on eight goals and one assist this season. Watson was second on the team with three goals and eight assists, while Boyens added five goals and two assists in 2005. Moss added a goal and two assists this season.
Sophomore keeper Mike Graczyk made the second team, despite leading the MPSF with a 0.60 goals-against-average. Senior Ben Ashwill earned his fourth All-MPSF honor, also making the second team. The entire Lobo backline was honored today with seniors Matt Wootton and Josh Brown earning honorable mention recognition.
The Lobos, ranked No. 1 in three of the four final regular season polls, grabbed the No. 2 seed in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. New Mexico faces the winner of the Bradley – Wisconsin-Milwaukee match in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the UNM Soccer Complex on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 7:00 p.m. (M.S.T.). BU and UWM face off in the first round on Friday in Peoria, Ill.
