ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico women’s swimming and diving team finished the Lobo Invitational in third place. The Lobos 897.50 points trailed Colorado State’s 1,321.50 points and Northern Arizona’s 948.50 points. New Mexico State finished fourth with a total of 453.50 points.
The top swimmer for the Lobos was senior Robyn Miller. Miller placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.38), 200-yard butterfly (2:07.81) and the 400-yard free relay along with teammates senior Kelsey Leckovic, junior Kelly Soldow and sophomore Tori Clarridge (3:34.67).
Sophomore diver Carrie Quinn clinched the first place spots for the Lobos on both days of the invite on the 1-meter springboard (249.70) and the 3-meter springboard (414.40).
Clarridge also placed second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.80. Miller, Clarridge, junior Kelly Soldow and sophomore Andrea Zarins took third in the 800-yard free relay (8:00.28). Other top swimmers for the Lobos included juniors Katy Vandam, Jen Hale, Jenna Syverson and sophomore Rachel Evans who placed fourth in the 200-yard medley relay. Freshman Summer Abt took fourth in the 200-yard back with a final time of 2:13.16. Clarridge and Leckovic sealed the third and fourth place spots in the 100-yard free. Hale had a fifth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and Zarins had a fifth place finish as well in the 100-yard breaststroke.
“There was definitely great improvements from our previous meets,” head coach Tracy Ljone said. “This just brings us one step closer to where we want to be as a team. Overall, it was a great swim for our team.”
The lobos, now 1-5, 0-3 in the MWC, will travel to San Diego, Calif. after a ten day break to face the Aztecs of San Diego State University. Competition will be held on Nov. 15, 2005 beginning at 1 p.m.
