The 15th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team moved up one spot to finish in sixth place at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. UNM was the two-time defending champions. Playing with three true freshman in the lineup, the Lobos had their best round of the tournament – a 13-over 301 – to end at 65-over 929. However, that was 52 shots behind tournament champion and fifth-ranked Purdue. The Boilermakers scorched the course with a 2-under 286 today to easily outdistance the field, beating 13th-ranked Wake Forest by 17 stokes. Complete results are available at www.golfstat.com.
Virginia took third at 30-over 906, followed by Tulsa (+48) and 24th-ranked Tulane (+58).
Lobo freshman Mikaela Backstedt led UNM again. Backstedt shot a 3-over 75, giving her a 54-hole total of 7-over 223, good for a tie for eighth. Purdue’s Christel Boeljon made five birdies in the final round, blazing to a 5-under 67 and claiming medalist honors at 4-under 212. Boeljon was the only golfer to finish under par on the challenging Nicklaus Course.
UNM senior Christine Fernandez shot her second straight 77 to finish in a tie for 24th at 17-over 233. True freshman Morgan Grantham, playing in her first collegiate tournament, recorded the Lobos’ low round of the day. After an 83 on the first day, Grantham shot a 2-over 74 in the final round, finishing at 19-over 235 and in a tie for 29th place.
Sophomore Giselle Claux finished in a tie for 38th at 23-over 239 after shooting a 3-over 75. Freshman Py Bengtsson closed with a 77, tying for 46th at 26-over 242.
The Lobos start their 2006 spring campaign Feb. 13-16, at the Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.
