The 15th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team found the going rough again at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. UNM, the two-time defending champions, shot a 23-over 311 in round two – actually a six-shot improvement from the first round – but is in seventh place, 37 shots behind leader and fifth-ranked Purdue. The Boilermakers shot the best round of the tournament, coming home with an impressive 1-over 289, and hold a commanding 12-shot advantage over second-place Virginia.
Wake Forest (+29) is in third followed by Tulsa (+32), Tulane (+43) and Penn State (+47).
Lobo freshman Mikaela Backstedt shot a 2-over 74 for the second straight day and is tied for sixth place at 4-over 148. She trails Tulsa’s Leisl Hasbrouck by six shots entering the final round. Hasbrouck shot even-par 72 and is the only golfer in red figures at 2-under 142. She holds a three-shot lead over Purdue’s Christel Boeljon.
Other Lobo scores: senior Christine Fernandez (79-77, 12-over 156), freshman Morgan Grantham (83-78, 17-over 161), sophomore Giselle Claux (81-83, 20-over 164) and freshman Py Bengtsson (83-82, 21-over 165).
