Recap | Final Stats | Notes
University of New Mexico Head Coach Rocky Long
“That’s as bad as you can play on offense in the second half. You can’t play any worse. I think we turned the ball over four times all in (Colorado State) scoring position. They could’ve beaten us by 50. They had the ball down there in the third quarter a bunch of times and I thought the defense did a nice job in the third quarter. I thought they collapsed in the fourth quarter. That’s as bad a (display of) offensive football as I’ve seen around here in a long time in the second half. I don’t think [the CSU defense] did anything different. I’ll have to watch the film and see, but it looked like the same stuff to me. We played poorly and they played better. I’m sure it’s a combination of both.”
(on whether the UNM defense was worn down in the second half):
“We didn’t tackle very well. We had a hard time tackling (Kyle) Bell after the last turnover when he went 20-something yards for a touchdown. I think we lost heart on defense a little bit. I thought they kept playing hard, but as soon as that happened, I thought that our players thought they were losing.”
New Mexico Tailback DonTrell Moore
“We just have to keep on fighting, take the bye week off, rest up and keep on trucking. That’s all we have to do – keep on working. We just need to let this one alone. All we have to do is focus on the next game.”
(on surpassing 1,000 yards rushing for the fourth straight year):
“It was a great thing that it happened, but I would take all the yards away for a win in a heart beat. I wish that was the way it was tonight. We had our chances. We just didn’t close the deal.”
Colorado State University Head Coach Sonny Lubick
“Well, that was one valiant effort there. We came down here and played a very good football team with a lot of weapons. We kind of made it tough on ourselves especially during the second quarter where they threw the ball for a touchdown and then stopped us on our fourth down. I just hoped we could get our poise back
(on the turn around in the second half):
“The coaches just did a great job. We controlled them on defense, there was a great defensive effort all the way around. I don’t know how many first downs they made but it seemed like they couldn’t get much. We went for the fourth down in the third quarter. I thought that if we could just score once and close the gap then our kids could look up at the scoreboard and see that we’re back in this game.
(on what you said during half time to help turn the team around):
“We talked about how we’re not out of this and we needed to prove that we could play even though it didn’t look like it. I knew it would feel kind of good if we could just score once in the fourth quarter.”
(on the importance of the win):
“This was a great win for us. It’s a hard one to come down here and win when you’ve got everything going against you. We’re just thinking about winning one more game now. This was a real huge one for us. This proved we are a pretty good football team I think.”
