WILMINGTON, N.C. –
The 15th-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team finds itself in eighth place after the first round of the Landfall Tradition being played at the Nicklaus Course in Wilmington, N.C. The Lobos are the two-time defending champions, but face an uphill challenge to repeat for the third time as they trail first-round leader and fifth-ranked Purdue by 15 shots.
The Lobos shot a 29-over 317, but are just one shot from fifth as Michigan, South Florida and Tulane are all at 318. Purdue leads the 12-team field at 14-over 302, two shots better than Virginia. No. 13 Wake Forest is third at 20-over 308 followed by Tulsa at 21-over 309.
Individually for New Mexico, freshman Mikaela Backstedt is tied with Purdue’s Christel Boeljon and Penn State’s Amber Weinerth for fourth at 2-over 74. Tulsa’s Leisl Hasbrouck fired a 2-under 70 to take the first-round lead. Leah Wagner from Virginia is second at even-par 72 followed by Wake Forest’s Mandy Goins at 1-over 73.
Other Lobo scores include senior Christine Fernandez (7-over 79), sophomore Giselle Claux (9-over 81) and freshmen Morgan Grantham and Py Bengtsson, both at 11-over 83.
