SAN DIEGO – Senior Chelsea Sondrup hit .667 (8K-0E-12TA) with four blocks for the New Mexico volleyball team but it wasn’t enough to propel the Lobos past San Diego State Friday night. The Aztecs (13-9, 5-4) shut out UNM, 3-0 at Peterson Gym, dropping the Lobos to 12-9 overall and 4-7 in the Mountain West Conference.

Game one was extremely close with 14 ties and 14 lead changes, allowing neither team to gain more than a three-point lead. Sondrup hit .714 (5K-0E-7TA) with two blocks while junior Kelly Therkelsen hit .400 (5K-1E-10TA) and senior Nicole Ryan hit .300 (4K-1E-10TA) with a block. SDSU’s Audra Dent and Lindsey Noll both hit .667 (7K-1E-9TA and 6K-0E-9TA, respectively) as SDSU took the game, 30-28.

Games two and three were full of runs for San Diego State, which won 30-13 and 30-17, respectively. In game two the Lobos were only trailing by one (3-2) when the Aztecs put together a 27-11 run. SDSU started game three with a 6-0 run and finished it off with a 12-4 run. New Mexico did have a 5-0 run in game three, cutting their deficit in half.

Freshman Michelle Miller put down four of UNM’s six kills in game two, hitting .800 (4K-0E-5TA) while Noll was 6-for-10 (.600) with three blocks. Sondrup and sophomore Samie Weber both put down two kils in game three. Sondrup hit 1.000 (2K-0E-2TA) with a block. Dent led SDSU, hitting .375 (4K-1E-8TA) with two blocks while Lindsey Mahan hit .333 (3K-1E-6TA) with three blocks.

Besides Sondrup’s stellar effort, Miller and Therkelsen chipped in with seven kills and a block apiece. Freshman Sarah Kwasigroch dished out a team high 28 assists while classmate Gayle Tripp had a team-high 16 digs.

Dent and Noll each put down 12 kills, hitting .474 (12K-3E-19TA) with two blocks and .478 (12K-1E-23TA) with four blocks, respectively. Melanie Greene had 11 kills and 13 digs for SDSU.
