ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team fell tonight against Air Force, with a final score of 161-139, in the opening home meet of the season.
Freshman Summer Abt had a tremendous first meet at UNM. She pulled out two first place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard back. Sophomore diver Carrie Quinn also had a great night. She finished first in both the 3-meter springboard and 1-meter springboard.
UNM had several top-three finishers through out the sixteen-event meet. In the 200-yard medley relay UNM placed second and third. The second place team included sophomores Tori Clarridge and Rachel Evans and juniors Jen Hale and Jenna Syverson. The third place team included Abt and Kristen Naber along with junior Katy Vandam and senior Robyn Miller. In the individual medley, Clarridge took third in the 200-yard freestyle, Vandam took second in the 100-yard back and Evans placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke. Miller finished first in the 200-yard butterfly and second in the 500-yard freestyle; Hale took third in that same event along with another third place finish in the 100-yard fly. Syverson finished first in the 50-yard free with teammate senior Kelsey Leckovic not far behind finishing in third. Senior Cassidy Lespreance placed third in the 200-yard back in her first meet at UNM. Sophomore Andrea Zarins placed third in the 200-yard breast. Junior diver Joanna Garcia took third in the 3-meter springboard. UNM finished the night with a bang, taking first and second place in the 400-yard free relay. The first place team included Syverson, Clarridge, junior Kelly Soldow and Miller. The second place team included Hale, Vandam, Abt and Leckovic.
The Lobos (0-1) return to Seidler Natatorium tomorrow at 12 p.m. to face the Cowgirls of the University of Wyoming.
