LAS VEGAS – The New Mexico men’s tennis team’s final entry still in the Main Draw of the Wilson/ITA Mountain Region VII Championships was knocked into the Consolation Draw at the Darling Tennis Center this afternoon. The seventh-seeded sophomores Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski were upset 9-8 in the Quarterfinals by 16th-seeded Chip Hand and Jonathan Sanchez of BYU.
Jones and Pajkowski advanced to the Quarterfinals with a 9-8 win over Montana State’s Marek Gebicki and Federico Ueltschi, the No. 12 seed. Senior Eric Conklin and freshman Graeme Kassautzki were defeated by eighth-seeded Peter Bjork and Marko Bundalo in the Round of 16. Freshmen Chandler Brass and Johnny Parkes, playing in the Consolation, fell in the Second Round to New Mexico State’s Stjepan Beg and Brice Magnanou, 9-8.
In singles action, Parkes, the No. 31 seed, knocked off Kassautzki (seeded No. 15) in the Consolation Round 4 Qualifier, 6-4, 6-3. Pajkowski, the 26th seed, fell in the Round 4 Qualifier, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3, to Boise State’s Steve Robertson.
Parkes and Jones return to the court for singles action tomorrow at 10 a.m. Conklin and Kassautzki kick off doubles for the Lobos, beginning approximately at 2:30 p.m.
