Freshman Mikaela Backstedt continued her stellar early-season play, leading the No. 15 New Mexico women’s golf team to first place after two rounds of Price’s Give ‘Em Five Intercollegiate being played in Las Cruces. The final 18 holes for the 21-team field gets underway Tuesday at 8 a.m., at the par-72, 6,319-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course.

The Lobos, looking for their 13th team title since 2001, enter the final round with a 1-shot lead over Missouri. UNM covered the first 36 holes in 15-over 591. The University of San Francisco is four shots back at 595 followed by host New Mexico State at 598.

New Mexico trailed San Francisco by five shots after the first round, but the Dons slipped to a 16-over 304 in the second round while UNM was consistent throughout the day. The Lobos shot an 8-over 296 in the morning and a 7-over 295 in the afternoon.

Backstedt, a native of Hollviken, Sweden, is tied with Missouri’s Denise Munzlinger for the individual lead after both golfers fired identical two-round totals of 4-under 140 (71-69). USF’s Jessica Potter is a shot back at 141. Lobo junior Ashley Rollins is all alone in fourth place at 1-under 143 (70-73).
