Led by freshman Mikaela Backstedt’s 3-under-par 70, the 23rd-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team is tied for sixth place after the first round of the 27th Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational being played at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque. The Lobos navigated their home course in 5-over 297. UNM is tied with 12th-ranked Cal.

Ohio State, ranked No. 24 in the Golfweek preseason poll, holds a six-shot lead after firing a 5-under 287. The Buckeyes were the only team to finish under par in the first round. Eighth-ranked Southern California and No. 14 UNLV are tied for second at 1-over 293 followed by unranked Texas A&M (2-over 294) and No. 3 Pepperdine at 4-over 296.

Ohio State’s Jennifer Cassidy and Pepperdine’s Eileen Vargas share the individual lead at 4-under 69. A total of 18 golfers shot scores under par on the par-73, 6,069-yard layout.

The highlight of the day for New Mexico was provided by freshman Py Bengtsson (first name pronounced like pea), who had her first career hole-in-one. Playing as an individual, the ace came on the 123-yard 12th hole. She used a 9-iron. Bengtsson and Backstedt each finished at 3-under 70, putting them in a four-way tie for third place along with UNLV’s Grace Woo and Baylor’s Josefin Svenningsson.

Other Lobos scores include sophomore Alexandra Phelps (2-over 75), junior Ashley Rollins and sophomore Giselle Claux, both at 3-over 76, and senior Christine Fernandez (6-over 79).
